Leading up to the 2016 centennial of Chicago’s Navy Pier, Studio/lab served as a core member of Team X, one of five finalists selected through an international competition to submit concept proposals for a renovation of the exterior public spaces of Chicago’s Navy Pier. Led by Xavier Vendrell Studio of Chicago and Barcelona, our proposal embraces the original function of the pier as a landing dock for water traffic and a public space for recreation and entertainment.
Like the team’s overall architectural plan, our proposed graphic system establishes an over-arching identity to unify and punctuate the pierscape. In addition to developing an approach for Navy Pier’s graphics and wayfinding, Studio/lab served as the team’s communication strategy and publication design partner—creating the visual and verbal content for presentations and project documentation.
