public sector initiatives

The founders of Studio/lab are design educators, each with academic careers based in public research institutions. As an extension to our commitment to advancing the disciplines of design, Studio/lab serves as a platform for professional advocacy and socially engaged design projects.

Marcia Lausen has played a significant role in the election design reform activities of Design for Democracy, a strategic initiative of AIGA, the professional association for design. She has additionally directed the resources of Studio/lab toward projects that support the public mission of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Susan Verba is founder of the Center for Design in the Public Interest at the University of California, Davis, where she collaborates with colleagues in medicine, anthropology, computer science, rhetoric and writing and leads a research/design team to address topics like opioid addiction and design for emergency response.
